Making Friends in Dubai in Your 30s

Making friends in your 30s is harder than it was in your 20s. That is true almost everywhere. Dubai adds its own specific layer of difficulty on top.

In your 20s the social infrastructure does the work for you: university, house shares, entry-level jobs where everyone is in the same boat and the same bar afterwards. By your 30s that scaffolding is gone. You have a life, a career, a routine. You are not short of things to do. You are just sometimes short of people to do them with who actually get you.

In Dubai that gap is wider for a few reasons. The city attracts high-achieving women in their 30s in large numbers, most of them mid-career, a lot of them relocated without their existing social circles. Turning up at large events and hoping for the best. You are past the phase of life where that produces anything useful. The energy it takes to work a room and follow up and convert a brief chat into an actual friendship is just not worth it at scale.

What does work:

Smaller, recurring groups. The friendships that stick in your 30s tend to come from somewhere you go back to more than once. A book club, a regular supper, a workout class with a community behind it. Repetition does what spontaneity used to.

Shared experience over shared interests. You do not need to love the same things as someone to become close. You need to go through something together. A workshop, a trip, an honest conversation at the end of an evening. Those moments land differently when you are older and less guarded about what actually matters.
